You internalize what's going on and it becomes part of you. And that becomes part of the healing process that you undergo. Forgetting is just putting something out of the realm of conscious thought. It can be there, it can come back. This has been demonstrated by people who've been held in prison camp in isolation and start to remember all kinds of things from when they were less than three years old.
