The Effect of Louis XIV on Versailles-Gattrina
Versailles wasn't actually built by Louis XIV. It's, I think, a tribute to Louis' vision that what was initially simply a hunting lodge near forests, is known to have very good prospects for anyone who wanted to hunt. He also uses it as his palace and decides to settle there, because it allows him to move power and to concentrate it around himself. A lot of the noblemen will accept absolutely appalling conditions in tiny little rooms above the kitchens where it smells bad with no fireplace or no window. And they'll do it, why? Because it is a way of progressing in society, of hoping that you'll be given some form of reward.
