The traits that make people love their work tend to be pretty general and don't have a lot to do with the specifics necessarily of exactly what you do for a job. The way you get these traits in your career is you become really good. And that gives you the leverage or the bargaining power you need to actually get these type of things in your career. That desire of craft is exactly what seems to lead people to passion much more than this desire to find some mythical perfect match.
Cal Newport is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Georgetown University, and the author most recently of Deep Work, a book which argues that focus is the new I.Q. in the modern workplace, and So Good They Can’t Ignore You, a book which debunks the long-held belief that “follow your passion” is good advice.
In addition to studying the theoretical foundations of our digital age as a professor, Newport also writes about the impact of these technologies on the world of work.
