The Role of the Fed in the Financializing Economy

I can hear people saying, see, this is all the Fed's fault because if rates were higher, people wouldn't be so crowded into equities. But in large part, I would argue that they're forced to because the US pension system is now intimately tied up with the S&P 500 or the Vanguard total market index. When asset prices fall, the potential future purchasing power for a sizable fraction of the US population can get eviscerated and that creates conditions of almost certain recession. They're forced into a reactionary mode against this.
