What's the Point of a Summer Camp?

Bister is about summer camp, but it's not like a literal summer camp. The idea that when you box up your children and send them off to summer camp isn't something I've ever experienced. But there are comments that Andrew Hussey made with regard to like the Homestuck fandom that suggested that they sometimes thought of it as kind of like a summer camp experience.
