How Did You Do Market Research Before You Become a Marketer?

How did you do market research without having done it before? That's a great question. So I was certainly fortunate in that I worked with some really good people who were willing to teach me. But there were tasks that had to be done that I didn't understand why. And even just the way the data was run and how we got to data tabs seemed so crazy to me so far.
