The same areas of our brain that become activated when we stab our toe or when we cut our finger are also activated by rejection. That's why it physically hurts because there's a neurological backing to that experience. Our brain relates the pain of rejection with physical pain and respond so similarly. And this has really deep links to social acceptance theory as well.
