The Mismatch Between Theory and Observation in the History of Science

The universe is a sum of huge things, some of which are positive and some which are negative. Without very detailed cancellations between the positive and negative, the order of magnitude of that number would be about 10 to the 120. So it's an interesting state of affairs where now the observations are saying that it's a non-zero value in order to explain the accelerated expansion of space. We have trouble making it small enough.
