The Importance of a Mental Toolbox

I think one of the things that I borrowed from Joe Frill, and I'm sure other coaches have done it too, is the big day. When you're suffering in a race, you can go to that mental toolbox. And that's one more thing to help you there. So as an athlete starts to taper, I have them sit down and write a race plan. What are you going to eat for dinner? When are they going to wake up? It really serves two purposes: One, it takes their mind off the taper; but two, it highlights all those things that we may have not talked about.
