A lack of belongingness or a failure to maintain lasting, positive and significant relationships can have an impact on our mental well-being. I think the problem with desiring a relationship comes when we implicitly or unconsciously believe that a partner will replace our need for that more complex, diverse sense of belonging. For example, you know, using a relationship as a bandaid for loneliness.
