We often don't realize the very role that we ourselves had to play in them arriving at that point, and specially people that are close to us in our lives. The idea is derivative from c s. Lewis, who wrote about this in an essay of his called the weight of glory. There's no neutral encounter with another human being; there's no such thing as a neutral encounter. And i just think thinking of ourselves as not wholly cut off or independent from the way that other people are has been important for me.
