Aristotle's Rhetoric of the Audience
Aristotle's discussion of forensic oratory doesn't use the standard innocent until proven guilty. Rather, you're just trying to show that your case is the more likely one. What he's really interested in here, as so often, is underlying causes. He shows himself a keen student of human psychology. We get angry when we are insulted, and we get angrier if the insult comes from a friend than an enemy. A knowledge of these causes will help us provoke an audience to pity, fear, anger and so on.
