What's the Goal of a Novel?

When you get stuck, there's one north star to always go to. Think about that poor person who's going to have to read the story. How isshe let's see what she wants. What is she expecting from a crime story? Is she expecting it to be said in another planet? Probably not. We could surprise her, sure. But what is that going to do to the other elements?
