An error budget is basically, in a way, the inverse of your SLO target. It says everything is still okay overall as long as we haven't had a bad experience at least 1% of the time. You can use it for amazing advanced alerting techniques and all sorts of things that I really think are much superior to your basic threshold monitoring.
