The Role of Sleep in Memory Consolidation
The ability to learn new information, consolidated information, or whatever you want to think about it is competing with other things that the body needs to do. The A&S during a sleep state is really sending signals to the brain saying everything's okay down here and the brain can keep on with this business of memory consolidation. But if at any point the body said, no, things aren't down here, we need you to send some information this way, then that would probably divert resources away from that consolidation process.
