Psychologist roy baumeister and his colleagues have shown that all variants of voluntary effort, cognitive, emotional or physical, draw at least partly on a shared pool of mental energy. Balmeister's group has repeatedly found that an effort of will or self control is tiring. The phenomenon has been named ego depletion. All involve conflict and the need to suppress a natural tendency.
