When we cling or we get really afraid of loss, we turn it in on ourselves and say, but I can't live without this person no matter what it does to me. Or we say, I just need to work harder to solve the problem. And they, I need to talk them into solving the problem even harder. But basically all we do is we look into the relationship itself as a way to solve it. We stay in that loop of purgatory. The same feelings of anxiety and clinginess could come about with a familial relationship. Just put a frame around that because from there all sorts of opportunities and tools and proactive steps open up.
