Teaching and Learning Can Be Engaging Without Being Effective

The culminating unit vity is a third grade apple feast. The children rotate through various activities at stations, making apple sauce and competing in an apple word search contest. At the end of it all, what do we want students to walk away from or from this experience that they really get? One of the phrases we like to use in understanding by design is as a concept of what we call enduring understanding. We use that to make the point that teaching and learning can be engaging without being effective.
