William James was born into a wealthy and prominent family. He suffered life-threatening health issues, an eye problem that left him temporarily blinded as a child. His father used his business connections to get him admitted in Harvard Medical School. After dropping out of medical school, he joined an anthropological expedition to the Amazon rain forest.
