The story was recorded by philostratus in the third century. It is a tale of an ephesian city coming apart due to a plague. The desperate ephesians turn to apollonius, the holy man, for help. He tells them that they must hurl stones at this enemy of the gods. But as soon as some began to take shots and hit him with their stones, the beggar gave them all a sudden glance and showed that his eyes were full of fire.
