How Do You Train for an Ironman?

"I never had a coach my whole career. I never had someone who was an exercise physiologist," he says. "So you have to look at progression, overload and recovery." He adds: 'There's a lot of blueprints out there that are wrong for each athlee'

And something that i also find really interesting in sard of that, is that that now we have the sort of like blue prints how you want to do an iron man. You want to do it an i man 70 point three, this is how you train for it, and this, this is how how it's done. Whereas i doubt you had that. So did you come up with your own training philosophy back then. And and how did that work? And was anyone else actually doing it, or was it truly just your own product? And, and then you've just sort of hown that overtime. And, and, and i guess sort of, you know, created the the blue print for ever on to follow now. Well,

starting ta lat on your last com and i don't know if i created the blue print ithere's a lot of blueprints out there that are wrong for each athlee, cause you have to, you have to look at their existing training profile, the amount of time that they have in each week. You have to look at their strength and their weaknesses, and then yount hopefully put that together in a programme. So you have to look at progression, overload and recovery. Those of the three tenants when i started trainin never had a coach my whole career. I never had a mentour. I never had someone who was an exercise physiologist. That was my backgrond. That's what i studied. But the application to the length of the ironman race, there was nothing out there an the marathon back in the seventies and eighties was low. How do people run a forty two k that that seems improbable. Ah, and then allo were doing on the end of this rather long bife and a long run. And so there was an attemplet to follow. Andow, trying to hone my own individual a protocol for training really was an evolutionary process. Like, whatd i do well this year? What i need to work on? And the end result, hoefuly, i can get faster. But i didn't have any guidance in that. A, there were studies that were coming out wher they started looking at different athletes, but i was sort of the old guy, the first guy that sort of tried this. And i said, well, it seems like my formula is working. But i was never, i was never really content. Jack, like, oh, that was an amazing performancenow, i won the race, and i'd almost finish the next day and look at myself with and say, i could have gone a lot better. And y, myno, swim wasn't as fast. I was soft on the bike here. My marathon should be way faster. And fin started coming down n below two 50, i think it was back in 84. So i kept the i cand run a lot faster than that. So i would always dissect what i was doing current day programmes. I think, unfortunately, follow if i can get more time, then i'm going to put more time in on the bike, in the run, particularly. And more volumes going to mean i'm going to go faster, and that's a mistake.
