Why the Romans Denied Aid to the Carthaginians

The mamertines, apparently the most fickle ruling class in history, cast about for some one to help them drive out their new ally. There was no one in sicily who could help them so they requested aid from rome. The romans were divided on how to react and there were moral as well as practical reasons to deny the request.
