In a war, you are literally physically with your subjects. You can emotionally connect the people and be affected by their emotional reality. And it's a very powerful experience. One of the hardest things that ever happened to me was in liberia during the civil war. A mortar round landed in a crowded field of refugees who had fled the fighting and crammed into monrovia.
