The R Sound in Early English
The r sound was much more diverse and variable than it is to day. But no matter how it was pronounced, it was always spelled with the letter r. Most historical linguists think that the r sound was mostly trilled or tapped in old and middle english. i tended to use a trilled r when i read passages from those earlier periods.
