CHAPTER

Is There a Connection Between the Brain and the Body?

Cognitive science has been that the brain is in charge and tells the body what to do. We now know embodied cognition is important, the way we move our bodies. Our bones release a hormone called osteocalcin when we are moving against gravity. It goes via the blood to the brain and has a role in improving memory or keeping memory healthy. As we get older, for a midlife, at least onwards, we need to be challenging our bodies and moving against gravity as much as possible. There's a whole system of hormones and nervous pathways which link things that happen in the body with the brain and the mind. That really is worth taking seriously.
