The Rise and Fall of Microsoft
In January 1993 Microsoft for the first time surpassed IBM in total stock market value. The FTC ultimately deadlocked on the issue and after a 2-2 vote in 1993 closed its investigation. In July 1994 Microsoft and the Justice Department reached a settlement out of court. Most hope that Microsoft would be broken up into separate companies like Standard Oil and AT&T had been. For the first time fighting for its life against an adversary it could not overwhelm Uncle Sam.
