In the Old Testament no certainly not. Whether in some Israelite understandings he may have done so that's certainly one of the options out there on the table because we have inscriptional material that may be read that way. The Old Testament doesn't spend a lot of space trying to talk about the specifics of Israelites beliefs when they were not lining up with what the Old Testament is teaching. They mentioned certainly that they follow the bales and things like that under every green tree on every high hill but those are very general nebulous statements.

John H. Walton is a professor of Old Testament at Wheaton College and Graduate School. Previously he was a professor of Old Testament at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago for twenty years.

Walton’s ministry experience includes church classes for all age groups, high school Bible studies, and adult Sunday school classes, as well as serving as a teacher for “The Bible in 90 Days.” John and his wife, Kim, live in Wheaton, Illinois, and have three adult children.
