Is the Status Quo in the United States?
I think it's pretty obvious that what people choose to do depends on the choices that they have. And if the only good choice is driving, then of course they're going to drive. I'm actually very skeptical of arguments that say we have the status quo in the United States because that's what Americans wanted. They may have wanted to own a car, but that's not to say they wanted to live in an environment where they can't get around by other means.
