Howard marks wrote a memo called dare to be great. The memo was written when the nifty 50 stocks were in full flower. In 19 73, 74, the opeck oil embargo and the resultant rocession took the s m p 500 index down a total of forty seven %. And many of the nifty 50 for which it had been thought that no price was too high, did far worse.
