Cognitive behavioral therapy evolved partly out of disillusionment with earlier psychotherapy approaches like Freudian, psychoanalyptus and its derivatives. The pioneers of cognitive therapy realized that the stoics had said something very similar to this, two and a half thousand years earlier. And indeed these ideas go all the way back to Socrates and beyond.
