Belief grief was a term I coined to capture this idea of what happens when a deeply held narrative that is part of our social identity turns out to be untrue or partially true. Psychological distance plays a little trick on our brain where when things have happened in the past, they seem blurrier and more distant. So again, it distorts our understanding of the past.
