A lot of Christians believe that as well as eternal salvation there's eternal damnation now. I think it is important that we don't take medieval paintings of fire and torture and just kind of put that on onto Christianity as the assumed understanding of what hell would be like my understanding of hell is that if a person in their heart doesn't want to be with God God's not going to force someone to be with them. Even if you don't believe that whatever hell is it's a place where you're going to suffer in perpetuity then that helps to a certain extent but I still think it leaves a bitterness there because even if its just an eternal life in eternity you'll have this lost awareness
