In 1458, just six months after the Love Day, matters once again began to spiral out of control. Queen Margaret succeeded in removing practically all of the Duke of York's appointees from office except for one. Richard Neville, the Earl of Warwick, who was still captain of the Calais garrison. The English political system had completely disintegrated. Open conflict was the only possible outcome.
