There's lots of things that go into this and there's the physical damage aspect, as you mentioned. There are studies in children where those who play video games for on average three hours per day have improved or better cognitive function than kids who don't after stratifying for multiple confounders. When it comes to social media, obviously, there's a whole bunch of stuff that we could get into but the thing that I find most interesting is this idea of social comparison, which is potentially problematic.
