The Whole Word Approach to Reading
The sounds and letters approach, also known as phonics, was popularized in the 1800s with the McGuffie readers. The other view is that children shouldn't focus on sounds and letters; they should focus instead on whole words. In the whole word approach, the idea is that learning to read is a visual memory process. See words enough and you eventually store them in your memory as visual images.
