As infective endocarditis is a bacterial infection, antibiotics are required for treatment. We typically use IV-Sophazulin in our stable patients and add vancomycin if they are MRSA colonized or have a high-risk history such as an individual with the history of IV drug use. Refampin is often also used as adjective therapy for those of the suspected infected prosthetic valves. Following a period of appropriate antibiotic therapy, your patient may warrant cardiac surgery to replace the infected valve.
