Humanity on the precipice (Toby Ord)

Rationally Speaking Podcast

CHAPTER

Is Existential Risk a Threat to Humanity?

I want to talk more about the challenge of working on something that's kind of abstract, at least compared to reducing the number of people who die from malaria each year. But before we get too far into the weeds, could you first explain what you mean by an existential threat? Because it's a little more complicated than just wiping out humanity, right? Yes. So an existential catastrophe is a, is something that destroys a humanity's long term potential. This would clude something like extinction, where if humanity went extinct, it it's clear why it is that our long term potential has gone and that there's basically only one path forward,. which is whatever would happen without any human action.
