Ming Smith's work is committed to making pictures about experiences of blackness within the United States and in many contexts beyond. She acknowledges the difficulties, the marginalized experiences of African Americans in this country but brings them together in a sense of complication. This is something that Ming Smith really holds as central to her photographic practice, not to look away, but also not to think of violence at all.
