We owe the tendency to categorize the world into us versus them to Ruth Benedict because she was writing for an American audience. No self-respecting anthropologist would take an example from Southeast Asia and then impose it upon an East Asian context. So this is part of what I'm trying to do in the book by iterating through different cycles of the Western and the Asian cultural lenses. In the process of breaking down some of these misunderstandings that come with bridging cultures.
