When we get defensive, what do we usually do? We lash out at the other person or we freeze because we just don't know what to say. And one of the most powerful things we can do is to just pause. So that listening, not letting the defensiveness take over and responding productively was something I had to work on so much in a professional setting. It's a hard skill to learn to remember to pause, but it can change your relationships at work in such a positive way.
