How to Retain What You Learn in Jiu Jitsu

I always encourage people if they're like struggling with a particular thing rather than going to an instructor first. I find that if I take the time to write things down, it helps it stick in my mind. It's easy to go and ask for an answer and have it handed to you, but then it won't necessarily stick because you didn't have to work to retrieve it or think about it. And also if you haven't tried whatever it is you're doing yourself and you're just looking for someone to hand you the answer, then you don't have that benefit of actually training and putting it into practice.
