Dieting is able to prey on us because something new or novel, we fundamentally think more likely to work. And we ignore the things that seem boring, familiar or too simple. A study at UCLA looked at people who went on a diet for a year and they'd follow them for another year after. On average, people gain about one to three pounds per year.
