Popeye came up with the original framework, this idea of the Black Swan. There was a famous biologist and I can't remember his name right now who said that a beautiful hypothesis can be ruined by a single ugly fact. So you have this idea that all swans are white and every white swan that you see is just confirming confirming your hypothesis. But then you take a boat to Western Australia and you see a black swan and it only takes a single sighting of a black swant to destroy that hypothesis. That's the usefulness in terms of an appropriate scientific mindset - constantly looking for those black swans.
