Aquinas 101 - Course 2: Introduction to Thomistic Philosophy

CHAPTER

The Essence, Existence, Distinction

Anthony Kenny has been highly critical of the Thomistic doctrine of the real distinction between things essence and existence. He distinguishes between two notions of existence, which are expressed by existential quantifier in modern logic. Specific existence is less a second order predicate of concepts rather than a first order predicate of individual objects. In Kenny's view, this cannot be true on either notion of whether we're talking about specific or individual existence.
