David Frum: Simply devising the experiment can be one of the hardest parts of this entire enterprise. There's no formula to it, and you're going to go backwards and forwards between thinking as a problem or recognizing perhaps there's not a problem. So often in physics at least, it's very difficult to see the effect that you want to see. The Mickelson-Mourley experiment to try and detect the so-called ether used an interferometer which was too slow for its intended purpose.
