Old English and Old English Vowels
For a time, both the air and or pronunciations existed side by side throughout much of england. It appears that this vowel change originated in the east midlands, in the eastern part of the country,. And it soon spread into london. But this particular vowel shift was never fully completed. The older pronunciations did not entirely disappear. Some very old words got a new r sound spelled with a r; some more recent loan words kept their original sound, spelled with e r.
