It was edited and compiled by Raoul Peck to create the narrative that Baldwin envisioned but never completed.

The book examines the tragic history of race in America, juxtaposing Baldwin's private words with his public statements, and explores the lives and struggles of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. It is a critical reflection on Black racial identity in America and the ongoing issues of racism and social justice.
