A hope more powerful than the sea

Book • 2017
The book chronicles Doaa Al Zamel's journey from her happy childhood in Daraa, Syria, to her escape to Egypt, and eventually her perilous voyage to Europe.

Doaa and her fiancé Bassem boarded a smuggler's boat with 500 other refugees, which was deliberately capsized, resulting in the deaths of all but 11 passengers.

Doaa survived, but Bassem did not.

The story highlights her strength, resilience, and compassion as she cared for two infant girls during the ordeal and later found refuge in Sweden.

The book is a powerful account of the Syrian refugee crisis and the human cost of conflict and displacement.
