Ship strikes on whales often go unreported, resulting in the death of whales at sea. WhaleSafe technology has shown a decrease in reported collisions in California from 11 to 4 after its launch. However, experts suggest that monitoring technology alone may not be sufficient. Avoiding collisions requires ships to slow down when approaching whales, yet many do not comply with speed restrictions which are voluntary in various areas. Making speed restrictions mandatory in whale-populated zones could be a significant step towards improving whale safety.
