Interpreting figurative versus literal in religious texts

In interpreting religious texts, it is important not to assume a literal meaning when a passage may be figurative. Just as Nicodemus and the woman at the well misunderstood Jesus' figurative language, it is suggested that the reference to being cursed with a skin of blackness in the Book of Mormon may be more symbolic than literal.
